Ossawa Tanner Retrospective Premieres in Pennsylvania

Posted on 23:01 by cena mical
"Resurrection of Lazarus" (1896) by Henry Ossawa Tanner
ALPHA OMEGA ARTSPENNSYLVANIA - A major exhibition of artwork by African-American artist Henry Ossawa Tanner will premiere at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), on view from January 27 through April 15, 2012. Henry Ossawa Tanner: Modern Spirit will contain over 100 works, including 12 paintings that have never been shown in a Tanner retrospective and the only two known sculptures that Tanner completed. The exhibition also includes Tanner's famed Resurrection of Lazarus (above), from the collection of the Musée d'Orsay, a career-making canvas that earned Tanner his first international praise when it was exhibited in 1897 and which has never crossed the Atlantic. Organized by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where the artist studied from 1879 to 1885, [it] will tour to the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. www.pafa.org/tanner/ [link]

Patrick King's 'Star Wars' Art Gets Imperially Religious

Posted on 23:47 by cena mical
COMIC ALLIANCE
By Brian WarmouthTEXAS - Religious fervor among Star Wars fans is no rarity. Take the International Church of Jediism, for instance. Patrick King's Star Wars artwork exhibits a similar level of piety melding some traditional Christian symbolism with recognizable costumed characters from the Empire's ranks. King even goes as far as to make them saints. There probably aren't many galactic citizens under Imperial control who would vote to canonize Darth Vader, but in the print you'll find on King's website (and his Etsy page) that's precisely what the man formerly known as Anakin Skywalker is depicted as. He's got a halo of light behind his head and a lightsaber in his hand. [link] Follow Patrick King on Twitter.com/patking13.

Texas Clergy Unite Against Gay Jesus Play

Posted on 22:42 by cena mical
SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS
By Abe Levy

TEXAS - Like-minded interfaith leaders stood in solidarity Tuesday on Main Plaza to denounce a local theater's scheduling of a controversial play that portrays Jesus and his disciples as gay men. “Corpus Christi,” written by Texas playwright Terrence McNally, pulls from the classic passion-play narrative with a coming-of-age story set in the 1950s South Texas town of the same name. In the play, Jesus grows up to discover a same-sex attraction, endures bullying and later presides over a gay wedding where he's called “King of Queers.” The clergy included nine people from Episcopal, Catholic, Jewish, Lutheran, Muslim and Presbyterian backgrounds, as well as the head of an interfaith network called the San Antonio Community of Congregations. They did not speak about their differing stances on the hot-button issue of homosexuality, instead focusing on their shared opposition to the play's profanity, sexual vulgarity and irreverence of the central figure in the Christian faith. Texas Artist finds Inspiration in Spiritual Symbols

Posted on 23:43 by cena mical
MY WEST TEXAS
By Sara Higgins
"St. Sebastian"(2002) By Sara Drescher Braswell
TEXAS - Sara Drescher Braswell often communicates through a snake, bird or rooster -- in her artwork, that is. All of her work is tied together through the symbolism she uses, mostly inspired from parables and stories in the Bible. In her watercolor "Blue Bird," Drescher Braswell reflects on how the "Mind of Christ" differs from that of the world. A young woman's mind is inhabited by a blue jay and pomegranate; the first symbolizes God's love for creation and the latter portrays a symbol of compassion, as well as the Body of Christ for its many seeds. Even trees in the background have their ties to Biblical stories. Using her background in graphic design, the artist created a website at http://www.sdb-gallery.com/ to display her work. She said it's terrifying to not have regular income, and more often than she'd like finds herself working on a computer while trying to maintain her creativity flow. [link]
